Coping With Panic
Attacks
If you are suffering from
panic attacks it may be comforting to know that you are not
alone. In America it is estimated that over one million people
suffer from panic attack symptoms regularly or some form of
anxiety disorder.
For most people the panic attacks
will happen infrequently and will only happen during a high
stress situation. People who suffer from recurring panic
attacks are known as suffering from what physicians refer to as
an anxiety disorder.
There are a variety of
different ways to help cope with anxiety disorder. It helps to
know some of the coping techniques so you can use them as a
crutch when experiencing panic attack symptoms.
The first important step is to
recognize the panic attack symptoms for what they are, simply a
panic attack. Many people will mistake a panic attack for a
heart attack because of shortness of breath or tightness in the
chest. If you are unsure it’s a great idea to consult your
doctor to make sure you don’t have any heart conditions or
other medical problems.
Once you have learned to
recognize the symptoms for what they truly are then you can try
various coping techniques to help alleviate the symptoms. Some
of the most common symptoms such as shortness of breath, rapid
heartbeat, dizziness, and inability to sit still are all
indications of a panic attack.
Another common symptom is
feelings of unreality. This symptom is often misunderstood and
is hard to explain to those who have never experienced it
before.
Basically when a person
experiences a panic attack he or she starts to feel out of
control. The body and the intense emotions of fear and anxiety
are in control instead of your sane mind. The feelings of
unreality can result from feeling this lack of control. It’s
like you are forced to look at the world through an entirely
different view or perspective that you aren’t used
to.
